Trafalgar Township Historical Society "Documenting, celebrating and preserving the agricultural heritage of North Oakville" Summer Newsletter 2011 michelle@tths.ca 905-257-9080 2431 Dundas Street W. Board Report Okay- I am a little late with this summer newsletter, but it is still summer and I still have time to squeeze in a fall one! We have submitted our concerns regarding the Town of Oakvilles Public Engagement Tool Kit. We wanted to draw attention to the fact that historical societies were not included in the list of groups that were to be notified when decisions on road naming was taking place. We have some new partners at the school house. The cubs/scouts will be using the building and the grounds one evening a week. We are very excited to have them join us and they are interested in helping out with projects at the schoolhouse and will be helping to cover some of the building costs. We are in need of more board members urgently. We really need a few more people who could pitch in. We need people to help with the following: Scan all our documents so we have back-up copies of everything for safety ; Co-ordinate renters at the schoolhouse ; Write funding proposals ; Dust & clean monthly ; Help file and sort everything for the archives ; Put together the newsletter 4 times a year ; Assist with organizing the fair & distributing posters ; Plan a grade 3 curriculum & promote it to the schools. Time To Renew Your Membership for 2011 Don't forget to renew your membership. We count on this income to cover the heating and insurance costs of the schoolhouse. ($25 for individuals & $35 for families) made payable to Trafalgar Twp. Historical Society. Send to Jane Watt, 3089 Jaguar Valley Drive, Apt. B2, Miss. Ont. L5A 2J1 Donations Thank you to Alan Norton who has donated a number of his father & grandfathers books to our collection. Thank You to Mario Testas son and a crew Irene Saunders put together for tidying up the basement over the summer Thank you to Nancy Brunelle who donated a school desk. 2 Schoolhouse Speakers Series: Tuesday, November 22 at 7pm John McDonald will be joining us. Anne has recently added a number of Ross Wark's Bronte post cards. Queries & Contributions Artist J. Weykamp: Mike & Lesley Stott own a painting by J. Weykamp and have been trying to find out who he or she was. We have a scan of a painting by Weykamp (TTOIDED0018) which is a scene of horses and men working on a road that is called Pulling Stone for Trafalgar Road. The painting they have is one of an old woman asleep in a chair. The signatures look identical. Can anyone help? Trafalgar Post Offices Irene Saunders sent in this response to the question about the Trafalgar Post Office. "When he took over the general store at Postville in 1925 my uncle, Leslie Bradley took over the job of postmaster as well. It was always called the Trafalgar Post office and was at the rear of the store. I don't know the name of the former post master. You'd have to go to the registry office to find that. I know that Uncle Leslie's pay was not as much as the former postmaster because they said he didn't have the experience... 3 The rural mail carrier for that area dropped off the mailbag each morning for the Trafalgar Post office and took the bag with the outhoing mail. When he sold the store the post office moved across the road but it didn't last long there." Irene S. Peachill Nancy Rorke asked about the location of Peachill. Jane found some Lustys in Georgetown and Acton. Could Peachill be somewhere on the border of Trafalgar and Esquesing, which meet up on Steeles Avenue? Can anyone help with this one? Could it be the name of a farm? THEO & HARRIET LUSTY MARRIED 20 NOV 1854, PEACHILL, TRAFALGAR, ONTARIO, MARRIAGE BY THE REV. D WRIGHT Hugh McLean & Jane Barr John Wood sent in this information..."I have been researching my family tree and came across an article in one of your online publications in regards to 3269 Dundas St. West, Oakville. You requested genealogical information and Im hoping you find my information helpful. My great-grandparents are Hugh McLean and Jane Barr. They emigrated to Canada from St. Mungos Parish, Lockerbie, Scotland in September 1920 and moved immediately into the 1 storey house at that site. They operated the farm as a dairy with some swine and poultry. Its our understanding that Hugh sold the family estate in Scotland and invested all his money into the Palermo property. At the onset of the Great Depression he was employed by E.D. Smith, Hamilton, the manufacturer of jams and jellies. The income he made from that job supported his family in Palermo and kept the farm in the family. In 1930 Jane died leaving the three younger children at home. The three children, age 12 to 17 continued to farm the property until 1933 when it became impossible to continue. The farm was sold and the three younger children were sent to live with older married siblings. My grandfather remained in the employ of E.D. Smith until his death in 1949. The picture I've included is my great grandmother, Jane Barr. The back of the photo simply said, Palermo 1924. I hope some of this is of interest to your historical society. 4 Heritage Events Around Halton September 14th: Esquesing Historical Society- Sherlock Holmes: The First Criminal Profiler An exploration of the 60 stories that introduced the world to this literary icon by by Doug Wrigglesworth.
