When fitness leader Lee Scott started power walking in preparation for the 2001 Vancouver Marathon, she could not have predicted how walking would change her life and the lives of others. Since then, she has designed North Americas leading coaching program for people who want to get fit from walking and she has become a recognized expert on how to coach walking athletes. She has walked 18 marathons and numerous other distance events. In 2008 she won the walking division of the Cleveland Marathon with a time of 4:55:58 and in the fall of 2009 she won the second annual Kitchener Waterloo Walking Classic 10k in a time of 1:01:35. Larger and in a more central- ized location, the new office at 700 Kerr St. will give the Chamber the physical space to do more pro- grams that were previously too constraining. Near the end of September, the Chamber office will be moved from its current location at Bronte and Wyecroft roads. We wanted to be as central as possible. We wanted to accommo- date our staff in terms of their trips. We had to have parking, said Mark Brown, chair of the board for the Chamber, speaking to the requirements of the location. Aside from its location, the size was a key factor in the move. Physically, its just too small, Brown said. Before our golf tour- nament, if you went in into our boardroom, it was stacked floor to ceiling with boxes. Essentially, we would be having our meetings in a storage area. With more physical space, Brown said the Chamber will be better able to serve the business community. Now weve got physical space where we can do all the things that we need to do, he said. The new office provides the Chamber with more meeting space and a place where physical work gets done. There are times when volunteers come in and work, such as on educational programs. What we hope people will see, this increases our capacity to deliv- er services to our members, he said. The Chambers president, John Sawyer, echoed those sentiments. I think our profile will be a lit- tle higher and were more centrally located. We were on the west-end of town and we were tucked in in the hotel. Though the space is not yet complete, Sawyer and Brown gave a tour of the new office to the Beaver. A key component of the new facility is the larger boardroom. The room is typically used for the Chambers board meetings.
