ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER Two Oakville Gymnastics Club (OGC) members will rep- resent Canada at next months world artistic gymnastics cham- pionships in Tokyo. Mikaela Gerber and Peng Peng Lee were selected to the seven-member Gymnastics Canada womens team. Team selection criteria was based on recent results at both national and international com- petitions as well as perofrmance at trial meets held last week at the OGC. Gerber and Lee will be com- peting at their first world cham- pionships in a bid to qualify a full team for Canada at the 2012 Olympics next summer in London. The top eight teams in Tokyo will clinch an Olympic berth and the final four of the 12-country quota for full teams will be determined early next year at a final qualification meet in London. OAK swimmer sets national record at FINA world juniors Oakville Aquatic Club swim- mer Mack Darragh set a Canadian age group record en route to winning one of 14 medals earned by Canadians at the recent FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. Darragh was third in the men's 200-metre butterfly, reaching the wall in 1:59.31. Finishing only four-hundredths of a second out of silver-medal position, Darragh beat his pre- vious personal best by more than two seconds. "The record is something I've really wanted for a long time," Darragh said. "I've done a lot of hard work in training with my coach and it's nice to see it pay off." Canada finished with four gold medals, five silver and five bronze at the meet. Grant named to Canadian junior women's softball squad Oakvilles Kirsten Grant has been named to the 17-player roster that will represent Canada at this years junior womens world softball champi- onships in Cape Town, South Africa. Softball Canada held open evaluation camps in 2009 and again earlier this summer. The organization also entered a 19-player squad into this years Canadian Open Fastpitch Futures Gold (U19) International Championship in Surrey, B.C., earning silver. Grant is one of eight Ontario residents on the Canadian team that will open the world cham- pionships Dec. 6. The catcher attended Tal lahassee Community College this past season, batting .333 with four home runs and 14 RBI in her freshman campaign. Dawson, Corbeil help Brampton reach Mann Cup Dan Dawson and Chris Corbeil are headed to the Mann Cup. The local National Lacrosse Leaguers and their Brampton Excelsiors advanced to the national senior lacrosse final with a 9-7 win over the Peterborough Lakers Sunday, taking the Major Series Lacrosse best-of-seven final in six games. Brampton will take on the Western Lacrosse Association champion Langley Thunder in the Mann Cup, which gets underway Wednesday, Sept. 7 in B.C. The Major Series Lacrosse champion has won the Mann Cup in each of the past five years, including Brampton title wins in 2008 and 2009. Aquinas grad will co-captain Syracuse hockey team St. Thomas Aquinas grad Taylor Metcalfe will co-captain the Syracuse Orange womens hockey team this season. The senior defenceman will share the C with Alberta native Megan Skelly. Both players have been with the Orange since the programs inception in 2008. Metcalfe served as an alter- nate captain last season and played every game, registering a goal and six assists. The former Oakville Ice cap- tain and Oakville Hornets prod- uct has one goal and 10 helpers in 94 career games with Syracuse. Syracuse will open the sea- son Sept. 30 when it competes in the East/West Showcase in Minnesota. Artistic gymnasts to compete at worlds SPORTSBRIEFS Led by its A squad that won the tournament, Oakville Soccer Clubs three under-10 boys' teams had a strong showing at the recent TiAmo Festival compe- tition in St. Catharines. The OSCs U10 A team went undefeated in five games, Oakvilles B squad lost just once to the A team in the semifinals and the C team rebounded from an opening-game loss to win its next two con- tests. Oakvilles A team defeated Pelham 1-0, tied Niagara Falls 1-1 and blanked Olympic Flame 6-0 before meet- ing Oakvilles B team in the semis. The A team needed a golden goal in extra time by Ty Jackson to earn a hardfought 1-0 win and advance to the final, where Oakville used goals by Jeveontae Layne and Brandon Byrne to edge Hamilton Sparta 2-1. The OSC B team defeated Fort Erie 3-1, Niagara on the Lake 6-1 and Saltfleet A 5-4 to reach the semis. Oakvilles C team fell 3-1 to Thornhill before dropping Roma 3-0 and Saltfleet 4-2. This was the second straight year an Oakville entry won the TiAmo Festival U10 title. Also contributing to the OSC A teams champion- ship were Ben Cull, Justin Ferrari, David Grkinic, Filip Hellich, Scott Holtshousen, Dylan Jackson, Conrad Milczarczyk, Vincenzo Neri and Jibran Qureshi.
