Hes in agony all the time. I was hoping Chris could get something done for us, but it seems like doors everywhere are slamming in his face. Oakvilles Chris Dohan and his wife befriended the brother and sister about 10 years ago and over the years have been help- ing them when they can. We help them out here and there, Dohan said. They get into all sorts of trou- ble ordering stuff and phone bills and my wife and I just straighten it out for them. We run little errands for them. Over the years, Dohan has taken William to appointments with specialists and to the hospital. But in just the last year alone, Williams condition has become much worse and transportation is now an issue, as hes unable to get into regular vehicles. His legs are so large that the skin splits and his legs leak water and pus. Hes unable to get up to go to the washroom or to the shower and is confined to his chair. A damaged or blocked lymph system can result in lymphedema, in which fluid builds up in soft body tissues and causes swelling, according to online medical reports. It can be caused by abnormal development of the lymph system, at birth or later in life. It can also be caused by damage or blockage to the lymph system, such as through infection, injury, cancer, removal of lymph nodes, radiation to the affected area, or from scar tissue from radiation therapy or surgery. Swelling of the arms or legs is a common symptom. There is no cure but there are treatments to control it. William had problems with the tendons in his legs since birth. Through some assis- tance, William was sent to get an operation at a U.S. clinc at age 18. Immediately after the surgery, his legs began to swell. In the last year or so, the lymphedema has gotten bad and is continuing to wors- en. I dont know where else to turn, Dohan said. Doctors have gone in, looked at him and just turned around and walked out. Nobody cares. Im getting really frus- trated. I talked to another therapist. They said the only place you can help him is to send him to Japan and this and that. He doesnt have the money. He doesnt want to go to Japan. Plus hes so big, I dont think they can get him on a plane. The brother and sister are alone much of the time. Their mother, who also had a mental disability, passed away this spring and there is no father. When their mother was alive, she held up much of the possible help. William should have got help a long time ago and a lot of the times when I did take him some place, she didnt want him to go, Dohan said. I guess she didnt want him to get better because she thought she might lose him or something, I dont know. William does go outside. The brother and sister kept their mothers electric wheel chair. Margaret uses it and William uses his and the pair go outside for four hours of the day. They ride around as far as they can go and it seems to ease Williams pain. When hes out, it keeps his mind off it, Margaret said. However, when snow falls in the winter, William becomes mostly trapped in his apartment. He cant walk so all he does is sits there all day, watches TV and eats, Dohan said of the young mans situation. He and his wife bumped into the brother and sister one day, became attached and helped out where they can. However, there is so much they can do and hope to get some help from someone who can. Im hoping for this because just nobody cares, Dohan said. I just want him to get some help. Hes in constant agony. Hes not in pain. Hes in agony. I call the apartment once in a while and talk to his sister and you can hear him in the background scream- ing. Chambers hosts candidates debate Sept. 13 Neyagawa Boulevard re-opened today between Dundas Street and Burnhamthorpe Road in Oakville. This road was closed July 4 for the instal- lation of a new large diameter watermain, as part of the Regions Building a Better Halton infrastructure plan. Drivers travelling on Neyagawa Boulevard will see some ongoing construction, and this may result in delays but the road will be open for traffic.
