With early detection, survival rates will increase dramatically to 90%. Your steps move us all one step closer to disease awareness and discovery of an early detection screening test. Instead, she came in first place in the junior division (ages six-12 years) in this years The Rising Stars Competition at the CNE. I hope I do as well as the others, she told the Beaver last week. I hope I dont get placed at the bottom. I hope to be second or third, but Im not sure about first. She received first place in the vocal divi- sion and received the Junior Grand Champion award, for a total prize of $1,500. The contest' final round was Sunday, Sept. 4 at The Ex. Her performance had a bit of irony to it as it began raining shortly after she finished performing her song, Dont Rain On My Parade. The young performer attributes her strong singing to vocal teachers Lorena McKenzie of Oakville, Kristal Jackson of Burlington and Mary Michaela Weber of Toronto. SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER SPECIAL 1 st Visit Only (NC)Acne is a very common, treatable skin condition that affects 90 per cent of teens. Fortunately, there are steps teens can take to man- age acne and keep their skin clear. Dermatologist Dr. Kirk Barber offers these tips for teen skincare: 1 Early intervention is always best. The sooner a patient seeks treat- ment and begins using an effective therapy, the better will be the chance of preventing long-term damage to the skin, such as scarring. 2 Seek medical advice. You family physician or dermatologist isbest equipped to recommend an effective solution. 3 One size does not fit all. With many acne treatment products on the market, it can be difficult to navigate all of the options. Acne prod- ucts work in different ways, depending on their active ingredients. Some kill the bacteria responsible for acne, while others reduce the inflammation. Combination products, such as Tactuo, combine ada- palene to unclog pores and benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria. 4 Don't squeeze your blemishes. You can risk an infection or cause scarring by touching your blemishes. It's best to be patient and treat your acne effectively in order to avoid damaging your skin. 5 Use gentle cleansers. Wash your face with a non-medicated soap or mild cleanser when you wake up and before you go to sleep. Do not overdo it, as excessive washing and scrubbing can worsen acne. 6 Avoid pore-clogging skincare products. Clogged pores are a breed- ing ground for acne-causing bacteria. Keep pores clear by selecting cosmetics, cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens that are labelled as non-comedogenic and oil-free. Skincare tips for teens
