I believe this elec- tion is about restoring the economic strength of Ontario. Our priority has got to be immediate relief from the high cost of government through a tax reduction, income splitting, and removing the HST from home heating bills. The assault on the family budget has got to stop. Then we need to lay the foundation for job growth through reduced red tape, coupled with reasonable tax rates that reflect the true cost of our real needs. We must reduce government spending and stop our government from unsustainably steal- ing future tax revenues from our children and Please let us know as soon as possible if you will have an accessibility or accommodation need at a Halton Region hosted event or meeting. 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville, Ontario L6M 3L1 Dial 311 or 905-825-6000 ? Throughout the provincial election campaign the Oakville Beaver will be asking candidates in the Oakville and Halton ridings to respond to weekly questions. Responses from the Oakville candidates will appear each Thursday and responses from the Halton candidates will appear each Friday leading up to the Oct. 6 election. The first question is "What is the main election issue in Oakville?" Nik Spohr NDP Ted Chudleigh While there are plenty of issues this time around, what I'm hearing most at the door is that life has become largely unaf- fordable for regular people. In a way afford- ability concerns touch on most of the other issues: HST-related costs; out-of-pocket public education 'extra' fees; post-secondary education tuition; creeping health and home care privatization; or child/ day care expenses, which may be the dark horse issue of this campaign. We've seen a rise in inflation, and a lowering in quantity and quality of public-services, part- nered with a lowering in household purchasing Healthcare is our top priority. Healthcare takes 80 per cent of the provin- cial budget. Both the Conservatives and the Liberals have taken their best shot and missed. If we are going to download and privatize services, there have to be checks and balances all the way down the ladder so that there is less bureaucracy and more care given to the patient from a well defined system. Streamlining and Integration are great but we all know what happens when amalgama- tion goes wild. The World Health Organization rates Canada As I go door-to-door speaking to friends and neighbours it is increas- ingly evident that people are primarily concerned with continuing the progress we have made with our public servic- es. Families in Halton want to know that their children will receive the best education possible and they know that full-day kindergarten is the single-most important investment in early learning that our government could have made. They know that our elementary and high school children are getting higher test scores Ted Chudleigh PC Karen Fraser Green Indira Naidoo-Harris Liberals Nik Spohr Karen Fraser Indira Naidoo-Harris See Nik Spohr page 14 See Ted Chudleigh page 14 See Indira Naidoo-Harris page 18See Karen Fraser page 18
