In his closing statement at the Oakville Chamber of Commerce candidates debate, Flynn commended the 23-year-old Harris, who is running as an independent candi- date. I ask you to take a serious look at all three parties and Mike his party of one, Flynn said. Im really glad Im sitting next to Mike. This is a terrific example of a young man that takes being a Canadian and Ontario citizen very seriously. He then added with a joke, I dont want any of you to vote for him, however. Harris and Flynn were joined at the debate by Larry Scott (PC) and Lesley Sprague (NDP). Not in attendance were Andrew Chlobowski (Green Party) and Steve Hunter (Freedom Party). Scott said his party is focusing on positive change for Ontario families, which creates better government. He said the PC govern- ment would provide relief for the family budget by cleaning up waste and incompe- tence in government. Sprague said 80 per cent of at-home sup- port in Ontario is by family and friends with no help from the Province. Through her own experience, Sprague said she has learned how this care should look for people in Ontario. Sadly, the ranks of frontline support workers have been decimated, she said. Those who do those jobs get paid poorly, she said, and tax credits for seniors and the dis- abled are a joke. Sprague said her party would stop put- fting those who are well connected ahead o the rest. Harris said hes hoping to engage people in voting, especially those his age. We need to think about how we address youth issues to get them engaged, he said. Harris wants to bring in a new perspec- tive to government, such as in terms of debt and deficit. Weve had debt and deficit in this prov- ince since before I was born, he said. I dont want to be passing debt and deficit onto my children and grandchildren. We need to have action on this. The incumbent MPP, Flynn, said the elec- tion is about values and that all the candi- dates were there for the same reason but have different perspectives. He said people get up in the morning and go to work every- day to support their families, their children and grandchildren and aging parents.
