This weekend, Oakville will be doing the same as it participates in Doors Open Ontario. In its fourth year, Doors Open Oakville will feature 25 locations open to people over the weekend. Its a really good, free family event, said Bill Nesbitt, museum supervisor for the Towns Recreation and Culture department. We especially find in the downtown area, where there are a lot of sites within walking distance, we see a lot of families with two or three kids in strollers, just walking from site to site. Most sites will be open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. There are a few exceptions though. Some of the locations include sites that are already open to the public, while there are those that are not. A lot of the sites that are open this weekend are sites that arent generally open to the public. Or (organizers) will be letting people look at areas that arent generally open to the public, Nesbitt said. As examples, he said people will be able to tour the Masonic Hall and learn about its history and view its artifacts, and a tour of St. Judes Church will take people up the tower and there will be plenty more to see. Nesbitt said some places that are normally open to the public will put on special programming for the event. Were trying to make the weekend very family friendly, he said. At the museum for instance we have extra stuff and extra staff to deal with the large numbers were expecting. It will be a little more interactive. At the historic Sovereign House in Bronte, people will be able to see a duet of music and visual art. On Sunday, from 2-4 p.m., two locals, pianist Brian Yayman and painter Kamil Swiatek, will put on a duet that will include one playing music, while the other paints. People will be able to see the Canadian Forces Armoury and Oakvilles fist post office will reopen after two years of renovations. People will also be able to board the Anitra Schooner from the Oakville Club. It is a private schooner, not nor- mally open to the public. The locations will put on varying types of programs, such as guided and self-guided tours. There will be a guided walking tour of the downtown heritage conservation district from Town Square on each of the Doors Open days. Its a really great way to get to know your own community. You get to see things you dont normally get to see, Nesbitt said. Nesbitt said past surveys show that 40 per cent of Doors Open Oakville visitors are from out of town, and 60 per cent of visitors last year were par- ticipating in their first Doors Open. There are several ways for people to learn about Doors Open and see a full list and schedule of the Oakville loca- tions. The Wednesday, Sept. 21 edition of the Beaver had a two-page spread with a map and information. People can also visit www.doorsopenontario. on.ca for more information.
