Throughout the provincial election campaign, the Oakville Beaver is asking candidates in the Oakville and Halton ridings to respond to weekly questions. Responses from the Oakville candidates appear each Thursday and responses from the Halton candidates appear each Friday leading up to the Oct. 6 election. The third question in this series is "What is your plan to improve air quality in Oakville?" d ' h f ll k ll d dE itor s note: T e o owing Oa vi e can i ates re- sponded to our question by deadline. Citizens should have full information and a fair say about planned industrial activities in their communities. Existing levels of pollu- tion should be taken into account when the government is consid- ering adding new sources of pollution to communities. We will reverse the exemptions granted by the previous government, and ensure that all industrial activities and emissions are posted on the E n v i r o n m e n t a l Registry for public comment. While tax schemes like the HST have made energy more expensive for con- sumers, theyve also offered dramatic no-strings-at- tached tax cuts to some of Ontarios biggest polluters. Lesley Sprague NDP Lesley Sprague See Lesley Sprague page 16 Kevin Flynn Liberal I will work with my party to make our new air quality management plan a success, to continue reducing coal-fired power generation, to reduce smog from cars by improving the GO transit system, and to protect the Greenbelt the lungs of the GTA when it comes up for review in 2015. Improving air quality has always been one of my top priorities. I fought hard to represent the interests of our community to ensure no power plant came to Oakville. (And not a cent was spent cancelling the con- tract.) In contrast, PC Larry Scott told Oakville Town Council that the federal Conservatives were unable to help stop the plant. Lee St. James, Scotts campaign manager, suggested Glen Abbey as an appropriate spot for a power plant. PC Leader Tim Hudak told an industry conference that he would not Kevin Flynn See Kevin Flynn page 16 The Balsillie Report states that transporta- tion sources account for 60 per cent of our air pollution burden. A PC government will invest in new transit and transportation solutions to help reduce congestion continu- ing the infrastructure investments like the GO Transit parking facilities and additional rail lines that are desperately needed for Oakville com- muters. A PC government will finish closing Ontarios coal-fired gen- erating plants by 2014 a job the PCs started with the 2001 decision to stop burning coal at Mississaugas Lakeview site. One of the main reasons I am the PC Candidate is because Kevin Flynn refused to fight for us when a mas- sive power plant was proposed for Larry Scott PC Larry Scott It is not an easy task to achieve immediate improvement in Oakvilles air quality. To do so quick- ly, one would have to shut down half of the industry in Oakville, southern Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton. Next, one would have to stop all of the traffic on the QEW, and convince all Oakvillians not to use their cars, especially Hummers, SUVs and mini-vans. If that were not enough, one would have to force the industry in the American Mid-West to drastically reduce emissions. In order to achieve the desired reduction in air pollution in Oakville and elsewhere in south- ern Ontario, a Green government will not only continue the current Ontario policies that support the development of renew- able energy generation, but also extend Andrew Chlobowski Andrew Chlobowski Green Party See Larry Scott page 16 See Andrew Chlobowski page 16
