By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville and Milton Humane Society shelter, located at 445 Cornwall Rd., will be closed to the public until further notice due to a small ringworm outbreak. The outbreak, which is currently affecting three cats in the shelter and two cats that were adopted into the community, was first identified as a potential fungal infection on Sept. 9. Humane Society communica- tions manager Brenda Dushko said the shelter began treating the cats while waiting for the definitive test results. We are pleased to report that the cats with the infection are respond- ing well to treatment and that no animals have been euthanized because of ringworm infection, said Heather White, acting director of the Oakville and Milton Humane Society. As we always say, they are part of our family until they become part of your family so their health and safety and the By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Living with coyotes in Oakville became a hot-button issue during the summer, but last weeks two-hour seminar aimed to alleviate concerns. The Town of Oakville-hosted sym- posium provided residents with facts about coyotes and offered advice to ensure a peaceful co-existence with local wildlife in their neighbourhoods. Nathalie Karvonen, executive direc- tor from the Toronto Wildlife Center (TWC), and Oakville Today journalist Michael Howie were guest speakers on the panel. Numerous coyote sightings in Oakville urban areas in recent months have sparked concern among some residents. As far as being a danger, Karvonen said perspective is very important with coyotes, as it is abnormal behaviour for them to be a risk and people shouldn't expect typical coyotes seen in neigh- bourhoods to be dangerous. Approximately 2,900 people are killed on roads in Canada each year, yet we still drive every day in our cars. Almost 200 people here are killed by lightning, said Karvonen.
