Ringworm is a skin infection that is caused by a fungus and not by a worm as the name suggests. Though itchy and irritating, ringworm is rarely fatal; however, it is contagious, which is why the Oakville and Milton Humane Society has decided, based on advice from veterinarians, to close the shelter to the public until they are confident the shelter is free of the infection. Dushko said most mammals, including humans, can contract ringworm and two Oakville and Milton Humane Society staff members are being treated for ringworm infection and are responding well to treat- ment. The Oakville and Milton Humane Society will continue to perform Animal Control duties in Oakville and Milton with stray ani- mals being cared for at local veterinary clinics and boarding facilities until they are reunited with their owners. The two cats with ringworm that were adopted out of the shelter are receiving treat- ment at their adopted homes. However, Dushko said the society will not be re-opening until it is certain it is clear of infection. Anyone who wishes to help the humane society during this time can donate towels, blankets, newspapers and box bottoms (used as disposable kitty litter pans). As always, monetary donations are deeply needed and appreciated. For more information, visit http://oakvil- lemiltonhumane.ca or call 905-845-1551.
