Just ask 12-year-old Taylor Tabry- Dorzek, of Oakville, who will be running in this weekends Sears Great Canadian Run to raise money for cancer research. The Grade 7 student at Mother Teresa Catholic School was inspired to get involved after her four-year-old cousin, Gabriel, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April. Ive always encouraged not just my children, but other young people to give back to the community wherever they can. Its really important for them to find out that one per- son can make a difference, said Taylors mother, Theresa. It doesnt have to be any- thing that raises tons, as long as you make the effort. You need to try and put yourself out there and I think its really important for kids to see. To raise funds to cover her participation fee, Taylor made, with her mothers help, friend- ship and inspirational brace- lets, necklaces and bookmarks, which she sold over the sum- mer to friends and people she knew, Theresa said. f She noticed that a lot o kids are wearing friendship bracelets, so she said why dont we do the friendship bracelets in the cancer colour? So there f all green and yellow, shades o In celebration of the recent expansion of the ReStore, Habitat for Humanity Halton is holding a photo contest. Customers sometimes delight us by email- ing photographs of their new kitchens, bath- rooms or other parts of their home that they have redesigned with products from the Habitat ReStore so we decided to turn this into a con- test, said ReStore Manager Maureen Champagne. The kitchen counters, cabinets and appliances, etc. that our volunteers are asked to remove from one familys home, when they are upgrading, become the beautiful new kitchen, at a great price, in the home of another family. The ReStored photo contest will showcase customers renovation projects using products purchased from the ReStore. The winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to the ReStore and a one-hour, free consultation with an interior designer for a future project. Customers can submit before and after pho- tos on-line at www.habitathalton.ca, along with a brief description of how ReStore products were used. Images must be in JPEG format. The contest is open from Thursday, September 22 to Monday, October 24. The top three photos will be posted on Habitat for Humanity Haltons Facebook and Twitter pages from November 9 to November 23 for the public to vote. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, December 7. AN INSPIRATION: Taylor Tabry-Dorzek will be running in this weekend's Sears Great Canadian Run for her cousin Gabriel, 4.
