But Greg Westlake still managed to better his own world record. Westlake turned in a speed of 73.507 km/h at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada, bettering his two-year-old mark for an arm-powered vehicle. Westlake had hoped to reach highway speed, 100 km/h on the three-wheeled, arm-powered bike built by Ivan Samila and Mike Nova. While he didnt hit triple digits, he did eclipse the old record (70.285 km/h) in just his second of seven runs over five days. It was a lot of fun, he said. I learned a lot about the bike. When you get there, youre learning something on every run. Westlake actually improved upon his mark on two more occasions, topping out at 75.870 km/h, but the wind was too strong for the result to be declared a record. That underlined the fickle nature of setting a record. All the stars have to align, Westlake said. You need the best conditions, you need the bike working at its best, I have to put down my best run. Everything has to come together. On Westlakes third run, the chain came off the bike and his next two were negated by the wind. On his final run, Westlake looked to be on his way to set- ting a new mark again. However, he was working so hard to power the bike that it wobbled and missed the final timing strip. Westlake said some of the competitors have been taking part in the event for 12 years. With just two years under his belt, Westlake knows there is time to improve. Had he been able to hit triple-digit speeds, he might have taken a break. But, know- ing he can do better, Westlake will return to Nevada next year. I know what the bike was capable of, he said. If we were there another week, I know we could have gone faster. I learned so much about the bike and how it works. Until then, its back to the ice where Westlake is captain of the Canadian sledge hockey team. The team will compete at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Calgary in late November. The Oakville intermediate AA Hornets will open the Provincial Womens Hockey League season with a pair of home games this week- end. Oakville will host the Nepean Wildcats tonight (Friday) for an 8:30 start, then is home to the Cambridge Fury tomorrow (Saturday) for a 4:30 p.m. matinee. Both con- tests will be played at Joshuas Creek Arenas. The Hornets went 9-19-3-5 last season fand were eliminated in the opening round o the playoffs.
