Halton police released statistics from Project Safe Start Thursday, which revealed that throughout Halton 2,350 provincial offence notices were handed out during the Sept. 1-16 campaign. A further 1,011 warnings were also issued. Oakville drivers received the second highest number of provincial offence notic- es at 717 with 355 warnings issued. The Milton, Halton Hills and Georgetown area drivers received the most provincial offence notices at 1,054 with 366 warnings issued. Burlington area drivers received 579 provincial offence notices and 258 warn- ings. Project Safe Start began in 2006 as a highly visible reminder to drivers that chil- dren are back in school and they need to drive accordingly. The campaign targeted people who drive aggressively in school zones, drivers on cell phones and other mobile devices and seat- belt violations. While Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell said the number of people being ticketed appears to be up this year he was optimistic about getting out the message. One driver Crowell spoke to said he had just heard about the campaign on the radio moments before he was pulled over for a traffic violation in a school zone. Bad driving costs you Speak up!
