The hundreds of Oakville residents who came to Coronation Park on a beautiful Sunday morning continued Terry Foxs dream of one day finding a cure for cancer. Thanks go out to each and every person who supported the Terry Fox Run this year. While the pledges are still being pro- cessed, we should raise between $75,000 and $80,000 this year for Terry Fox-funded research. Many people come together to make the Run possible. First, there is the organizing committee who meet all year and were at Coronation Park to see the sun rise on Lake Ontario to Thank you Under sunny skies last Saturday afternoon, the students and mentors of the Kids Culinary Community Garden enjoyed the fruits of their labour. They were celebrating the final harvest from a community garden located at Dundas Street and Neyagawa Boulevard. fThis vegetable and herb garden is an offshoot o the Kids Culinary Community (KCC), a non-profit organization that is the brainchild of local restaura- teur and chef Julia Hanna. Hanna is determined to teach as many children and teenagers as she can the importance of eating well. So, in addition to showing young people how to cook, she and her supporters have also demonstrated how to grow what they eat. It is such a simple concept, but one that too few parents follow: pay attention to nutrition and spend crucial family time eating dinner. In this hyper-tapped in world, where Blackberries are not a chosen fruit, but a form of communication, the art of cooking and sharing a meal appears to be becoming lost on families. Hanna saw a need and has run with it. Her enthusiasm for this project is contagious and she has put real meaning into the saying, We are what we eat. KCC programs are designed to educate children about the benefits of healthy eating by giving them the necessary skill set to prepare a meal. These cooking sessions teach children that taste doesnt need to be sacrificed for nutrition. KCC provides a solution to childhood obesity. As well, it promotes the importance of making mealtime an event, not an inconvenience, with con- venient foods. Hanna has received a lot of ongoing support for her cause and that was evident in the celebration Saturday. From Longos to Rosehaven Homes and Starlane Homes (the gardens land donors), to volunteers and politicians, KCC looks like it is developing firm roots in Oakville. We are fortunate to have people who care so much about the well-being of others especially when it concerns the health of future generations. Were lucky people care Pud BY STEVE NEASE neasecartoons@gmail.com Halton certainly has some incred- ible men. Men who are standing up, speaking out to show their support in ending violence against women. Last weekend, more than 80 men partici- pated in Halton Womens Places sec- ond annual Hope in High Heels. What we saw were men who believe they can make a difference in preventing and eliminating violence against women. We believe so, too. Jerry Dias, along with his son, Jordan, helped raise $33,000 in pledg- es, helping Halton Womens Place reach a record $63,000. Jerry, a man dedicated to raising awareness on the issue, stood before the crowd and addressed his fellow walkers he knows it is not a womens issuehe knows the problem doesnt lie with women. He knows more men need to be a part of the solution. Thank you, Jerry and Jordan. Special mention to Fred Haladay, who raised more than $3,500. And thank you to all the men who came out to support the thousands of women and children that Halton Womens Place helps each year. Last year alone, Halton Womens Place provided services to more than 1,000 women and 1,300 children. Our crisis intervention counsellors responded to 2,500 crisis calls. Special thanks to our guest speak- er, Diane Clemons, an amazing sup- porter who encourages, inspires and motivates everyone who hears her speak. Special thanks to our lunch sponsors Craig Kowalchuk from Emmas Back Porch, Burlington and Donna Corrigan from Boston Pizza, Dorval Drive, Oakville.
