While running in the trails I passed a man walking his dog. I quickly told him the dog was lost, but had to keep going in order to keep up with her. Eventually I got her to stop about 20 feet from me and sit. A rest for both of us, finally. A short time later, the man was back. He had taken his dog home, hopped on his daughters bike to find us, and had dog treats with him. It just so happened that where the dog and I had stopped was close to his moms house. The dog, hungry for the treats, timidly followed his Hansel and Gretel trail into the backyard and we shut the wrought iron gate. I was so relieved, after 90 min- utes, she was finally safe. She let me pet her through the gate and my emotions got the better of me. Even more so when the kind man told me that the walk he had just taken with his own dog was poten- tially their last as they were late for a vet appointment to see if his dog was going to be put down (thankfully the test results were good and they are companions still). I was overwhelmed and thankful for the actions of strangers that day, together we made a difference. When I left the dog in the care of the mans mom, I was able to run home with a lighter heart. The little dog was picked up that afternoon by the Humane Society and she was reunited with her family that evening. A happy ending indeed.
