We have a strong plan to create 80,000 jobs over four years, good, long-term jobs with on-the-job training and possibilities for advancement. Our plans include: creating an emergency den- tal care program for unemployed and working poor adults; making child care affordable while keeping spaces open; investing in one million hours of additional homecare services to give a hand to families caring for loved ones. For too long, Ontarians have suffered because of inadequate, unco-ordinated, and inconsistent mental health and addictions services. The Ontario NDP support Navigating the Journey to Wellness, which calls for the creation of a single body respon- sible for the design, management and coordination of a mental health and addictions system, includ- ing coordinated primary care, and peer supports. The Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) announced Wednesday that it has appointed for- mer York Region staffer Valerie Martin to the role of executive director. Martin, said HMC officials, brings a wealth of senior leadership experience and knowledge of community-based programming, volunteer and social justice issues to her new role with HMC. Prior to joining the HMC team, Martin worked in York Region with the Welcome Centre Project where she developed e-tools, policies, protocols and procedures to ensure service excellence across five welcome centre locations. Martin is passionate about social justice initia- tives where social inclusion, anti-oppression and anti-poverty campaigns contribute to the social fabric of the community. HMC officials said this fits well with the mis- sion and vision of the HMC, a non-profit, com- munity based settlement agency that was founded in 1979 by volunteers of a number of cultural groups to provide a variety of programs and ser- vices to immigrant and refugee communities. In addition to immediate actions to lower taxes and provide relief to families, well modernize the welfare system to make it fairer. The welfare system is currently governed by more than 800 different rules, many of which contradict one another. We will allow Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program recipients who work part-time to keep more of their benefits and ease their transition from welfare to a job. To help guarantee the services we need, a Tim Hudak government will reduce the num- ber of agencies, boards and commissions, and the hidden billions they consume.
