The OCF is asking all registered candidates to consider how they will work to improve mental health service delivery to the community. Other questions they want answered revolve around how candidates would reduce wait times for children and youths with mental health issues and what they plan to do about preventative care. The OCF said it has seen evidence of the gaps in service as local agency applications for grants regu- larly include funding requests to serve a long list of clients waiting for mental health services. These requests, it stated, have included helping teens with eating disorders, therapy for abused women and respite for Alzheimers caregivers. The OCFs Volunteer Grants Committee reports that requests always outnumber the ability to help in these and many other areas. Michele Sparling, a mother of a child with a mental health issue, said she has travelled 21,400 kilometres this year to ensure her child got the ser- vices he needed, but which were not available in his own community. The OCF said it is particularly important to help youths with mental health issues. It stated there is an increasing number of teen suicides, with 11 per cent of surveyed youths in Oakville admitting that over the last 12 month period they have tried to kill themselves. The OCF went on to say that each year in Ontario, between 100 and 150 youths commit sui- cide. The organization believes more discussion of the issues will lead to greater understanding of the chal- lenges the community is facing and serve to bring about positive change in the lives of Oakville resi- dents. A blood donor clinic will be held in Oakville on Oct. 4 in memory of 12-year-old Jenna Santelli. As part of a province-wide donor campaign run- ning Oct. 3-7 Jenna's Angels honours the memory of the young girl who passed away on Oct. 31 last year. Jenna was an avid supporter of the blood pro- gram. She knew the difference blood donors made in her life. Passion, determination and resiliency best describe Jenna.
