OP EN HO US E SU N 2 -4 OP EN HO US E SU N 2 -4 OP EN HO US E SAT & SU N 2 -4 Getting the best-dressed tables at Table Tops workshops St. Mildred's to ladle out Empty Bowls this year By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Having the best-dressed tabletop on the block is just a workshop away. Discover the designer secrets and emerging trends in table setting this Saturday (Oct. 1) at a series of workshops featuring some high-profile experts as well as jaw-dropping displays of theirs and local retailers talents. Table Tops for All Occasions is a cre- ative fundraising event organized by the May Court Club of Oakville. Head to Oakville Town Halls south ( g )atrium 1225 Trafal ar Rd. where from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. workshops entitled Holistic Design, Making Table Linens Work for You and Table Dr Hi/Low, Top Five Designer Secrets, Autumn at Your Door Step, Confidence with Colour and the Value of a Designer, are running. The sessions are led by such local notables as Rick Vernon of Rooms 'N Blooms, Daniela Tonelli of Linen Emporium, Marilyn Denis Show expert, designer Lisa Canning, Brian Donovan of Kravet Fabrics and colourist Roz Kavander. Among the more than two dozen fea- tured designers is Frank Rea of Forget Me Not Flowers. He calls his feature table exaggerated opulence because it combines the eclec- tic dr of traditional French elegance with sleek modern flair, namely crystal and Lucite in a whimsical, romantic set- ting. You just have to see it for yourself, he said. Rea said he was flattered when the May Court Club approached him to take centre stage at the event. Hes had a con- nection with the charity for about 10 years. Im pleased to be among the other great talents of Oakville, Rea added. Tables will be laid out by some of the best in the business, including Jacqueline Glass, Sandra Cross, Adina Ingram of Simply the Best Event Planning, Cynthia Taylor-Luce and Anna Rea of Tocca Finita. Retailers demonstrating their wares include Contrasts of Oakville, Dr with Grandeur, Design West, Enchanted Dr, Fresh and Fancy and Lillium Flowers, Forget Me Not Flowers, Fosters and Roomworks, Haute Cuisine Cookies, House of Flowers and Dede Hacking, House Warmings, Kravet, My Back Shed, Rooms in Blooms, Silkeborg, and Zest for Living. Tickets for Table Tops for All Occasions are $20 (cash only) and can be purchased at the door on the day of the event or in advance at the May Court Club of Oakville, Nearly New Shop, House Warmings, Especially, Enchanted Dr, My Back Shed and Zest For Life. The workshops require pre-registration. To add to the fun, two fabulous prizes will be raffled off. First prize is a $2,600 weekend getaway to a Niagara bed and breakfast that includes transportation in a Mercedes Benz, golf with a foursome and wine tasting and dinner at Rockway Glen Estate Winery. A wine basket and numerous other pampering goodies are also included in this prize package. Second prize is a $1,500 girls day out for six, which includes a limousine service to and from the Lee Jofa/ Kravet Canada Showroom in Toronto for a tour, plus din- ner for six. Raffle Tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The May Court Club of Oakville is celebrating 56 years of service in town and has more than 200 members that fundraise and volunteer locally. In 2010/11 the club donated over $288,000 back into the community. For more information, visit www.maycourt.ca. Home Suite Hope is very excited to be holding its fifth annual Empty Bowls event on Sunday, Oct. 16 with new host sponsor St. Mi ldred s -Lightbourn School. Participants will line up in the schools brand new dining hall in antici- pation of tasting the deli- cious soups from the 18 restaurants and caterers that will provide soups for the event. The lineup is a key part of the event, as it provides some idea as to what it might be like to have to wait in line for meals an experience that many individuals living in pov- erty in Canada face daily. Diversity is a key ele- ment to the curriculum at St. Mildreds-Lightbourn school this year, and eco- nomic diversity is a part of the learning process. Many people in Oakville do not realize that home- lessness is growing in their community, and that 85 per cent of the more than 8,300 low income households in Halton are found in Oakville and Burlington. For attendees at the Empty Bowls event, the wait in line proves reward- ing not only because they will select a beautifully painted hand-crafted bowl that they will take home but also because they will be supporting some of the most vulnerable families in their community. Tickets to the Empty Bowls event are $55 and include a $25 charitable donation that goes direct- ly to Home Suite Hopes work in providing transi- tional housing and out- reach services to families in Halton that are facing homelessness or a hous- ing crisis. Tickets can be pur- chased online at www. homesuitehope.org.
