Oakville Transits 160 bus drivers, cleaners and mechanics have issued a strike deadline for (tonight) Friday at midnight and could be off the job Saturday unless their union and the Town of Oakville reach an agreement. Key demands made by the union focus on better treatment for injured workers, scheduling rights and vaca- tions, as well as improved wages and benefits. The unions previous agreement expired May 15, 2011. Negotiations are continuing, said Jane Courtemanche, director of strate- gy, policy and communications with the Town of Oakville. We expect they will continue as long as is necessary to get a settle- ment. Courtemanche said the Town remains optimistic a settlement will be reached before the strike deadline, but said they will be updating OakvilleTransit and Town of Oakville websites to keep residents up to date on what is happen- ing. Optimism is also rising within the union that an agreement will be struck, however, its representatives say there is still a long way to go. 40 Pages $1.00 (plus tax)A member of Metroland Media Group Ltd. STRIKE DEADLINE: Oakville Transit is facing a strike deadline of Friday at midnight as it negotiates a new contract. By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF rThose in need will be able to have a fair share of thei appetite satisfied at Oakvilles Fareshare food bank thanks to the facilitys annual two-week Thanksgiving food drive, which begins Saturday. From Oct. 1 until Sunday, Oct. 16, the 44 volunteers at Fareshare will be accepting donations and stocking shelves for the almost 400 families it serves each month. Fareshare was established in 1988, receives no government funding and is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteer executive director Dudley Clark said the food bank is currently in good shape, and isnt desperate for donations, which is different than several years ago. Thats changed because we are getting food on a regu- lar basis and, as a result at this time, even if we did not have the Thanksgiving food drive, we could probably get by quite a few months ... but I would have to trim the quantities in order to work within what weve got, said Clark. We have food, but we want you to contribute some Oakville Transit strike looming at midnight See All page 3 See Bus page 2 Thanksgiving at Fareshare food bank
