The new hires feature 13 former professional soccer players, nine former national team members and more than 250 years of combined coaching experience. Under the new system, coaches have been assigned to oversee each of Oakvilles 16 age/ gender groups from under-11 to under-18. Those coaches will direct the clubs A rep team in their respective age/gender group as well as being involved with the other rep squads and the OSCs house league. Rather than just focus- ing attention on the A team in the program, its important to give every player the opportunity to develop their potential to the fullest extent,de Vos said. The other eight coaches will be respon- sible for the OSCs advanced development program (ADP), which replaces the former OSC Academy. The ADP will target promis- ing youngsters ages 8-10 and allow them to train with and play against players of similar ability throughout the year. Well offer places in that program for players who have demonstrated ability that is advanced, compared to their peers, said de Vos, who described the ADP as a pre-rep p g p y gro ram. The OSC re s stem be ins at the under-11 age level. Igor Prostran, a former coach in the OSC Academy with both local and international fplaying experience, said the development o skills between the ages of eight and 12 is crucial for potential elite players. Its the golden age of learning. Technique, technique, technique, he said. Its about technically developing play- ers for the later stages. Then they develop tactically more in the older age groups, both physically and mentally. Joining Prostran as advanced development pro- gram coaches are Steven Killeen, Eddy Berdusco, Milan Kojic, Lee Merricks, Michele Houchen, Stephen Armstrong and Heather MacDougall. Worton, a longtime coach with the OSC, said the new direction of the club is similar to the philosophy he has used for years. In the past years, Ive worked closely with B and C rep team coaches, he said, and now were also looking at the house league as well. If theres one or two players that developed at a later stage or slipped through the net, well interface with those house league coaches and the door is always open. If anyone feels they have a diamond in the rough, well happily bring them up to the C team. Bernier, who came up through the OSC system as a player before going on to play NCAA soccer with the Alabama Crimson Tide, is excited about working with the youngest group of girls in the OSC rep system. The good thing is that at age 10 and 11, they are blank slates. They havent devel- oped any bad habits yet, so its a really crucial year for development that Im work- ing with here, she said. I want to make sure the girls know right from the start that there is no A, B, C or house league mentality. No one is labeled. Everyone has a clean sheet, she added. Ill be continuously bringing in house league players to have a chance. You cant just rest on the fact that you were on the A team last year. Thats just the way life is.
