Oakvillegreen recognizes town's green citizens By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville's environmental heroes were recognized for their caring and dedication Wednesday at the fifth annual Urban Forest Awards. The event, which was hosted by the local environmental organization Oakvillegreen and the Town of Oakville, attracted about 50 people to Town Hall's South Atrium where organizations, schools and individuals were singled out for the special honour. "It is a pleasure again to help recognize the many residents and businesses and schools who contribute so much to protecting and enhancing Oakville's urban forest each year," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "We are very lucky here in Oakville where citizens care deeply about the town they live in and that caring extends to our natural environment." The Town of Oakville's concern for the environment was recognized with its forestry department receiving the first award of the evening in the form of the Joyce Burnell Tree Champion Award. Oakvillegreen president Karen Brock listed the forestry department's implementation of a program to combat the emerald ash borer, its enforcement of numerous policies, which protect trees on public and private property and in developments, and its experimentation with innovative techniques like radial trenching to improve tree health, as just a few of the reasons the department mental beautification projects, hosting events for environmental groups and participating in tree plantings. "They know what it means to be community partners. They know what it's like to dig in and get things done," said Brock. "They live the phrase `Be the change you want to see in the world.'" Aki Tanaka, Patti Eix and Mill and Katy Mines took home awards for Outstanding Tree Foster Parents. The Environmental Educator Award went to Jennifer Duguay and Martina Felps, who were recognized for creating an outdoor classroom with trees and shrub beds for their students at Oakwood Public School. Although only created last spring, Brock said, the outdoor classroom is already thriving and well used by students. "I'm absolutely honoured," said Duguay. "I think these projects represent an incredible opportunity for the kids to get back into the outdoors, get them away from video games and get them learning about the environment, the importance of sustaining what we have and building things for the future so they have outdoor spaces to enjoy."
