All of a sudden, the rights movement was gathering steam and women were on the air everywhere, even anchoring, she said. "The only problem is that it's usually a good idea to get some good experience reporting, covering the news before you step into an anchor chair, but there actually hadn't been any or very many female reporters," said Mesley. "Things got better over the years, of course, (because) women are starting out as journalists and working their way up just like everyone else," she added.
