WHY SEEK ATTENTION WHEN YOU CAN GRAB IT? en's voices aren't authoritative enough,'" said Mesley. "It was just like 25 or 30 years ago," said Mesley. The journalist noted however that you wouldn't consider that a woman's voice was authoritative if you'd never heard them as such. In 1976, she began her broadcast journalism career as a radio reporter in Toronto. Mesley moved to television in 1979, first with CTV's CFCF in Montreal, then moved to CBC-TV as a legislative reporter for local news and The National l, based in Québec City. In 1985, Mesley moved to Ottawa as a parliamentary correspondent for The National. During this time, Mesley reported on such stories as the battles over free trade, the GST and Meech Lake. "When I first moved to Ottawa as a parliamentary correspondent in the mid-'80s, it really was a man's world and they referred to us as the `skirts,'" said Mesley. "We were so determined to be treated seriously. We didn't realize at that time, but looking back, I think The National l was kind of all about looking big. We had the big suits, we had the big perms, (and) we had the huge shoulder pads," said Mesley. Around that time, things really started to change in terms of the role of women in the journalism business, Mesley said. All of a sudden, the rights movement was gathering steam and women were on the air everywhere, even anchoring, she said. "The only problem is that it's usually a good idea to get some good experience reporting, covering the news before you step into an anchor chair, but there actually hadn't been any or very many female reporters," said Mesley. "Things got better over the years, of course, (because) women are starting out as journalists and working their way up just like everyone else," she added. Mesley said there has been progress made over the last two decades with respect to where women are positioned in her profession, but they still haven't reached "president level," and there is still much progress to be made, similar to the nuclear industry. 2012 Infiniti QX45 9CRG72 AA00 $ Rate 1.9% effective rate 2.95% · 48 month lease · $19,400 total due @ signing including HST.
