At the Wednesday, Oct. 5 board meeting, trustees voted to approve the establishment of a transportation advisory committee. The committee will review transportation related topics, including, but not limited to, policy, procedure and practices. "We've had, , fairly y consistently, y, items associated or having to deal with transportation at the table over the last year and at the previous term of the board, and I'd like to see us deal with these issues to the depth that we wish to," said board chair Don Vrooman, who brought the motion to the board. "I don't think the board table is the place for that. We may not want to have one or two hour discussions here on an evening when we have other important business to consider." The public school board is part of the Halton Student Transportation Services ( (HSTS), ), which is a consortium composed p of all four of the local school boards, and makes transportation decisions. The newly established committee will review issues and report its recommendations to the public board. It will then be up to the board of trustees to approve the recommendations. "As a member of the consortium, a board motion is probably the only way we can make changes to our policies and the policies of the consortium and I believe this is the appropriate venue," Vrooman said. The committee will consist of such members as trustees, board staff, HSTS representatives, elementary and secondary principals associations, the board's Special Education Advisory Committee, members of the community and other groups as appointed by the director of education. Vrooman will call the first meeting of the transportation advisory committee.
