Artscene Will newly arrived couple take on big risk on TV show? By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF With the hopes of career growth, a lawyer and his wife recently moved to Oakville, but the sale of their P.E.I. home was not enough for a down payment in town. Not wanting to wait long before making a home purchase, Jeff and Jessica Cormier are faced with two business opportunities, one with a greater chance of a quick reward than the other, but with a much higher risk as well. That is the premise of an upcoming episode of Risky Business with W. Brett Wilson on Slice, featuring the new Oakville couple. The show airs Monday, Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. "I'm not really a big TV person myself, but when I saw the premise of the show, it really suited my personality and I thought Brett Wilson is a great entrepreneur and it would be a great opportunity to spend time with him albeit briefly to learn any tips that he has gained over the years," Jeff said of his and his wife's decision to go on the show. As parents of two young children, both under four, the couple hoped to move into a home before the children went to school. This way the family would not have to move again once they could buy a house and the children would not have to be faced with changing schools. Shortly after moving to Oakville a year ago, the pair saw an ad for the show. So Jeff and Jessica decided to invest $10,000 with the hopes of growth in 30 days. "(We're) presented with two investment opportunities," Jeff said. "Essentially, going into the show that day, it was a morning for us, we didn't know what the offer would be. But, we did agree to invest a certain sum of money, $10,000." The investment only has 30 days to grow, which was just fine to the Cormiers. "The investment premise on the show is that it's 30 days, but we did want to buy a house in the short term. We thought, for us, it was better than renting," Jeff said. The couple was presented two investment opportunities, knowing that any profit made off it would be used towards buying a home. "Each of these opportunities has a reasonable opportunity of turning a profit within 30 days," he said. "Generally of the two investment opportunities, one is perceived as maybe more high risk, but with the potential of higher reward. The other opportunity is lower risk, but lower potential reward." The Cormiers moved to the GTA hoping to improve their career opportunities. "I moved here because I wanted my career to grow or to flourish. I thought there were much more opportunities to grow, career wise, in the GTA," he said. Liking the community, the couple decided on residing in Oakville. 35 · Friday, October 14, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com SUBMITTED PHOTO THE DECISION: Oakville's Jeff and Jessica Cormier face Brett Wilson on the investor show Risky Business, which airs Monday on Slice.
