5 · Friday, October 14, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Ghost walkers invariably share their own tales Continued from page 1 to whom -- and which are said to be haunted. Robert Murray (Daniel) will tell stories with the assistance of his `historical parents', Esther Thomas (Belcher) and Phil Brimacombe as Merrick Thomas. The walks will also feature Carol Gall as Jacques and Stewart Sherriff portraying Peter MacDougald. Jacques was a French Canadian worker from Lower Canada who camped on the back streets along the Sixteen Mile Creek in the 1870s and 1880s in an area known as the French Village and worked loading logs. MacDougald built the Granary and married Mary Jane Chisholm, William's daughter. "We're trying to get more characters involved because we have so many people who want to take the walks. We have 34 (walks) booked this year," said Belcher. Belcher said they will also have six ghost bus tours this year to accommodate seniors from retirement homes and long-term care facilities. The ghost walks take people back almost 200 years -- to just before the War of 1812 -- to find Murray (Daniel) Thomas's grandfather, Seneca Thomas, settling his family in Canada. As the war breaks out, Seneca is captured by the British, makes good his escape to the U.S. and dares never to return to Canadian soil. "We stop and talk about the different houses and the characters who lived there and tales of ghosts. There are ghosts at the Oakville Centre, at Erchless, (and) several of the houses have ghost stories people who have lived there over the years have shared with us," said Belcher. Legend has it that nine different ghosts frequent Erchless Estate -- including that of the late lady of the house, Rebecca Chisholm. Belcher said she was once leading a ghost tour, which she has done for nearly a decade, and was waiting as she believed some ghost walkers had stopped to take a photo with a flash one night by Erchless. "People were pausing just outside of Erchless and then I thought they were taking pictures, but no one had a camera out, there was a flash of light that came from inside Erchless and there's nothing in Erchless that would cause that," said Belcher. "They practically jumped in my arms." Evening tours are to be augmented with additional weeknight tours starting Oct. 18. The last week before Halloween will see four evening tours and three walks per evening. "It's fascinating because now the people enjoy the stories, and every year there will be at least one person who shares a ghostly experience with us," said Belcher. The walks start at 7 and 8 p.m. at the Oakville Historical Society, located at 110 King St. Every tour will be followed by refreshments. The cost is $12 per adult and $6 per child.
