www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, October 19, 2011 · 16 Artscene Classic rock band ends hiatus, plays England for first time By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Back in the band's heyday in the '80s, Coney Hatch made several attempts to play in the U.K., none of which panned out. Now, with the revival of classic rock, Oakville Juno Award-winning solo musician Andy Curran and his three playmates from the longhair era have reunited and have a few upcoming shows, including in the U.K. First, they will play a warm-up gig at Burlington's Boston Manor on Thursday, Oct. 20. Right after that, the band will hop on a plane and head over to Nottingham, England to play at the Firefest Festival on Sunday. "We had a lot of press over there and we had a couple tours that were cancelled, that we never played with Whitesnake and Rainbow back in the '80s," said the Oakville vocalist and bassist for the band. "We just never got around to playing there so it's kind of ironic that 30-plus years later we're going to be going to England for the first time." The Toronto-based Coney Hatch played in the early '80s together, releasing three albums, the last of which came out in 1985. "When we put out our debut album in 1982 that was produced by Kim Mitchell we did extensive touring all over North America. We went out with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Krokus. We spent our whole time touring and we managed to do three albums," Curran said. However, the good times did not last. "By the time '85 rolled around, we've been together for five or six years and we called it quits. Internally we weren't getting along well and we lost our record deal in the US. We went our separate ways." A year ago, the band got together and played at the Hamilton Festival of Friends. Afterwards, the band was contacted by a promoter in England to play at the '80s-style rock festival in Nottingham. During the break up, Curran along with the band's other vocalist and guitarist, Carl Dixon, went on to have solo careers, during which time Curran won his Juno. There were requests for the band to reform, but it never happened. Then Dixon nearly lost his life in a car accident in Australia and things changed. "He was in a head-on collision about three years ago and we promised him that if he got better we would reunite," Curran said.
