"It was a game that I really enjoyed when I first saw it," the 15-year-old said. "I really liked the basics, like putting the ball and watching it go in the hole." Khan did that quite efficiently at last week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) boys' golf championship in Belleville, though he might have needed binoculars to see some of those putts drop in the cup. The Grade 10 student at Appleby College drained 30-foot putts on the 17th and 18th holes of the tournament's final round to force a playoff, then defeated Clinton Central Huron student Paul Doig on the first playoff hole to win the OFSAA title at Trillium Wood Golf Club. Khan carded a score of 66 in the second and final round of the tournament to overcome a threestroke deficit after Day 1 of competition, when he shot a 70. "I was in the hunt (after Day 1), which is always a great feeling to have," said Khan, who moved to Mississauga with his family several years ago. "I knew if I just gave myself opportunities, I was confident enough that my putting would help me throughout the tournament." That it did. Khan stayed a shot behind Doig by sinking the long birdie putt on 17, then put the pressure on the leader by hitting another 30-foot birdie putt. Doig had to settle for par after his birdie attempt lipped out. "Once (Khan) made that putt, I knew he'd have it in the playoffs," said Steve Poplar, Appleby's golf f coach. Khan opened the playoff by drilling his drive down the fairway and putting the pressure on Doig, whose tee shot found the hazard. Khan played the rest of the hole conservatively to make par, while Doig scrambled back into contention but missed a 12-foot par putt. Khan, who developed his golf game during three years at the world-renowned IMG Academies in Florida before attending Appleby, won the Harvey Penick Junior All-Star American Junior Golf Association tournament in Texas earlier this year. Last month, he was named to the provincial See Blue, page 33 OSC Annual General Meeting Notice OTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the 2011 Annual General Meeting of the Oakville Soccer Club Inc.
