- Laura King is the teacher. Laura may have been about 18 years old in this photograph. She would not have continued teaching after her marriage in 1909.
This one-room schoolhouse still sits on the west bank of the 16 Mile Creek, Fourth Line just below Dundas. It was used as a house after the school was closed.
The "Sixteen Hollow Schoolhouse" is recognized by the Town of Oakville on the Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest (Not Designated) as having "potential cultural heritage value for its historic rural one-room brick schoolhouse". - Notes
- Laura's parents were George and Mary Ann, called Polly, King who owned the property on Highway 5 (Dundas Street) in Trafalgar Township called The Pines. Laura married George Lockhart Spence on April 8, 1909 and their children were Hester Louise Spence, Lillian Mary Spence and William Kenneth Spence.
Extended family children remember Aunt Laura with great affection. They were always welcome at the Spence farm near Lowville, and spent happy summer days playing. - Subject(s)
