The challenge is a province-wide initiative supported by the Recycling Council of Ontario, Metro Ontario and Tetra Pak Canada. It comes with a $1,000 reward, which will be used to plant trees in the school community. Since school lunches are a major source of waste in Ontario, St. Andrew participated in this challenge to educate students on how much waste we generate and what we can do to reduce or eliminate waste. On Wednesday, a Grade 2class sorted the entire school's lunch waste on a large tarp in the school's foyer. They sorted compostable waste, recyclable waste and garbage. Students from other grades then visited to see the school's garbage and then discussed in class how to reduce their impact on the environment. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Deborah C.
