13 · Friday, October 28, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com River Oaks boosts school spirit with annual Hoot 'N' Nanny By Megan Munro and Jackie Emmerson Grade 8, River Oaks P.S. At River Oaks Public School there is a very scary tradition. It's the annual Hoot `N' Nanny, a most frightening event organized by our River Oaks Leadership Council (ROLC). The Hoot `N' Nanny is a day when we celebrate Halloween by running obstacle courses, telling fortunes and setting up haunted houses. On Halloween day, each class comes to the gymnasium for about 20 minutes of jam-packed fun. Our Grade 8 organizers (emcees) start off by talking about the games and going over the rules. Then the students are guided through the gymnasium, fitness room and change rooms to experience many different games and activities. It's all designed to provide students with exercise, to experience the sounds and sights of Halloween and enjoy a variety of activities and fun challenges. · The older students in our school like the Hoot `N' Nanny too because it provides them with an opportunity to develop their leadership, their communication skills and most importantly provide an opportunity to inspire the younger students. · There is a lot of planning that goes into the games. The council has meetings to decide which roles they want to play and what games or activities they want to run. Everyone gets a chance to participate. To keep organized, the ROLC has a due date. Students submit the rough copies of their game plans and they have to get them approved by teachers. Once approved, we can set out to gather together props and set up the activities. Our meetings are also a time to contribute ideas, like decorating, making posters, and announcing the Hoot `N' and the equipment room. We turn these three rooms into haunted houses specializing in various themes such as circus. We guide groups of three or four through and tell them a story. The rooms are decorated according to their theme, using strobe lights, music and other Halloween ornaments. All students running activities dress up in costumes to demonstrate their school spirit. ·"The "Hoot" is a great way to develop a positive culture in our school. We encourage all schools to have a leadership council and run fun events like a Hoot `N' Nanny. It allows students to be creative, provide input into their school, share their ideas, and work together toward a common goal. Our River Oak's "Hoot" is a really fun way for the older students to get involved at school and enjoy Halloween. Events like this provide the younger students with something to look forward to when they are in Grade 7 and Grade 8. · If your school doesn't do a Hoot `N' Nanny, then be creative and make something like it. The Hoot `N' Nanny is a wonderful way to celebrate the fall season, the beginning of a new school year and Halloween. Nanny. · Many games go into making it a successful day; these include face painting and obstacle courses, like the spider web crawl and the witch race. We also have games that show off your skills in sports, like pumpkin basketball, terrifying tetherball and spooky schlockey." Then imagine walking through a room blindfolded with people guiding your hand into bowls of spaghetti and Jello, and telling you funny stories. · The main events take place in the two change rooms YOUR 2012 VOLVO S60 & XC60 30 Anniversary th Celebrating 30 years.
