Red Cross needs drivers The Red Cross celebrated its transportation programs Oct. 24 with Transportation Service Day. The goal of the transportation programs, such as one in Oakville, is to provide vulnerable members of the community with rides to the doctor or other medical appointments, shopping trips and social outings. The program allows clients to maintain their independence while helping to reduce strain on their families. Last year, transportation volunteers helped provide 233,283 rides to clients in Ontario. In Oakville, 27 volunteers provided 10,000 rides to 700 clients. It is predicted that by 2041, 24 per cent of f Canada's population will be over the age of 65, according to Statistics Canada. As the population continues to age, the importance of community support programs is increasing. Programs such as transportation services, allow individuals to remain in the comfort of their own homes longer while helping them maintain their quality of life. Volunteer drivers allow the Red Cross to keep rates at an affordable price for its transportation services.
