"I share Tree Canada's vision of a healthy environment for Canadian communities through the stewardship, long-term care and nurturing of urban and rural forests. It is my hope my position will allow me to further this work, in Oakville and beyond," said Burton. Tree Canada is a not-for-profit, charitable organization established in 1992. It celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012. With funding from private donors, corporations, and various government bodies, it provides education, technical assistance, resources and financial support through working partnerships to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees in rural and urban areas. Tree Canada has planted more than 77 million trees and is responsible for their ongoing care and maintenance. "We are delighted to have Mayor Burton join our board. His track record clearly demonstrates that green initiatives, and urban forestry in particular, mean a great deal to him," said Michael Rosen, Tree Canada president. The Town of Oakville was designated as the Forest Capital of Canada in 2007 by the Forest Stewardship Council of Canada. It was also the first municipality in Canada to receive a Certified Forest designation for its management plan for Iroquois Shoreline Woods Park. Oakville was the first municipality in Ontario to complete a community-wide Urban Forest Effects Model (UFORE) analysis. Earlier this year, Oakville was honoured with the Joyce Burnell Tree Champion Award for its work in the realm of urban forestry. Other changes to Tree Canada's Board of Directors, include the election of Timo Makinen as chair, Andrew Kenney as vice chair, as well as the selection of Léo Duguay as a new board member.
