The police pursuit and shooting resulted in a 27-year-old woman suffering a gunshot wound to her shoulder. Halton police released additional information about the occurrence Monday -- a week after the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) began its investigation. Police said the incident began at around 9 p.m. on Oct. 22, when police were called to the Oakville Entertainment Centrum, located at 2081 Winston Park Dr., in response to a vehicle theft. In their statement to the SIU, police said the vehicle was later located on a laneway on North Service Road, near the Oakville Water Treatment Plant. The vehicle, a black SUV, was accompanied by another vehicle, which had been stolen earlier from Burlington. Police said both drivers attempted to flee the scene at which point officers opened fire. One driver fled eastbound along North Service Road where the SUV collided with a police cruiser near Third Line. EDS affects only one in 5,000 Continued from page 5 as a cohesive and multi-discipline approach. Initiatives for the program have long-term goals to help youths suffering with chronic pain in each of the 27 cities across Canada that have teaching hospitals. "They would take care of the medical components and the ILC Foundation would take care of funding and non-medical parts," said Smeenk. "We're building an online pediatric chronic pain peer support network where there will be educational materials that will speak to youths and parents, and then a separate link that would be specific to medical professionals." For Brooklyn, the lower back pain she experienced took her from her pediatrician to countless doctors and specialists. She was hospitalized at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children and in Hamilton. After months of tests, she was diagnosed with EDS, a rare condition that affects one in 5,000. The type of EDS affecting the teen is genetic and results from a shortage of collagen in the body's joints -- glue that holds the body together, said her mother, Rebecca. Brooklyn's source of pain is from dislocations as the body fails to stay `connected.' The disease also causes heart and blood pressure-related issues. Brooklyn's condition deteriorated. She became confined to a wheelchair and then a hospital bed. She missed more than a year of high school. She was in an intensive pain management program at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The $50,000 cost was one her parents paid willingly, but so far they have not been reimbursed through the Ontario health system. A fundraiser was held in February to help pay that bill. This past summer, Brooklyn spent nine weeks at Mount Sinai Hospital, a week at Oakville hospital, and then one month under the care of Dr. Fraser Henderson in Maryland, Smeenk said. "She has done (six) different surgeries on her and, today, when she stands up she has no pain," said Smeenk. Brooklyn has been in Maryland for a month, recovering from her latest surgery. She is expected to be home within two weeks, Smeenk said. "Her life is going to be so different when she comes home. She stood (up) with no pain, her feeling has returned in her feet and her vision is back. She's actually eating instead of needing to use her feeding tube." Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased online at http://oakvillerocknrollparty.com/. The event is at the OE Banquet Hall on 2245 Speers Rd. Doors open at 8 p.m. For more information on ILC, visit www. theilcfoundation.org.
