www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 24, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pud By Steve Nease snease@haltonsearch.com MPP takes issue with other's view I was disappointed to read so many factual errors in Mr. Ted Chudleigh's column (Oakville Beaver, Feb. 17.) Indeed, Mr. Chudleigh's suggestion that the Oakville Hospital was "on the verge of being built four years ago" couldn't be further from the truth. The oversized cheque presentations made by Mr. Chudleigh's colleague, Mr. Tony Clement -- the former provincial health minister and now the federal health minister -- created false hope for so many communities across the province including here in Oakville. When the McGuinty government was elected in 2003, it was faced with a seemingly insurmountable $5.6 billion budget deficit left behind by Mr. Chudleigh's Tory government. Although quick to make promises, they fundamentally ignored the declining state of the province's critical infrastructure, in particular our hospitals. The McGuinty government has made massive investments to repair the neglect of the past through ReNew Ontario -- the McGuinty government's five-year plan to invest more than $30 billion in rebuilding the province's public infrastructure. Over 100 hospital projects are moving ahead across the province, including a new hospital that will serve our community of Oakville and the broader Halton region. The expansion of the Maternal/Child unit at the current site of the Oakville hospital received the support of the government and will provide appropriate space for family-centered care. This project is scheduled for implementation in 2007. The McGuinty government is pleased to be working alongside the Town of Oakville on the site selection for the new hospital and the community should look forward to seeing significant progress in the development of the hospital in the months to come. Unlike the previous government, the McGuinty government has done more than simply show up for photo-ops. We're actually building for the future right here in Oakville.
