A training session for all volunteers will be held at 7 p.m. in the Atrium at Town Hall, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. As preparation for the Nov. 19th parade -- the 63rd edition for the Town of Oakville -- the meeting will provide an overview of the parade morning and various volunteer duties on parade day. Volunteers are required to be at the staging area for the parade (located on Robinson Street) by 7 a.m. (sharp) on parade day and will finish at approximately 11 a.m. High school students will be eligible to receive volunteer hours for their participation. The Oakville Santa Claus Parade relies on volunteers who work in several areas: · Parade Logistics: adults with authority are required to assist police and security officers to ensure that traffic barriers are manned, provide directions to drop-off areas and generally assist with traffic control. · Parade Marshalling: Adults or high school students (age 16 and over) will walk with an assigned section of the parade to ensure the parade keeps moving and prevent any gaps by asking slower groups to pick up the pace. They will also ensure spectators do not crowd the road and float participants are not throwing candy. Costumed characters are enthusiastic students (aged 14 years and over) or an adult who will walk fully-costumed as a Christmas or cartoon character (including a head piece) for the entire parade route. They will walk in groups of two or three characters, and will be energetic and dramatic with their actions. · Costumed Character Escorts: Students (aged 14 years and over) or adults are needed to guide costumed friends through the parade, as some costumes have obstructed site lines. The mascots rely on their escort to help them if the crowds get a little too excited and can help them keep up with the parade. Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery is located at the corner of Neyagawa Boulevard and Dundas Street overlooking the beautiful Sixteen Mile Creek. In the spring of 2012, the Town of Oakville will open new graves at St. Jude's ' Cemetery for interring cremated remains, for which a waiting list has been created. St. Jude's ' was established in 1853 and is the resting place of many of Oakville's earliest settlers. Planning ahead ensures that loved ones do not have to make painful and difficult decisions during times of mourning.
