Chloe and Lauren Miller helped Appleby's junior team reach the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) and were about to begin their second season on the Blue Dogs varsity field hockey team. Sophie, though, had never played the sport before. The Oakville resident ended up playing net for Appleby College and Saturday she wrapped up her first season by posting back-to-back shutouts as Appleby won its first Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Associations (CISAA) championship in 12 years. Appleby defeated Port Hope's Trinity College School 1-0 in the championship game. With some tutoring from Appleby's assistant athletic director Katie Henhawk, a former university field hockey goalie, Miller thrived in her new role. "She's been amazing," Cater said of the Grade 10 student. "Her skills have grown massively. She's a force to be reckoned with. She's not afraid to run out and attack the ball. She knows she can rely on her sweeper so she's confident and she can go for it. She saved our skins a number of times." The same could be said of Oakville's Inga Muser, who scored in sudden-death overtime to give Appleby a 1-0 semifinal victory over North York's Havergal College. Huser's second-half goal then proved to be the winner in Appleby's See Appleby, page 31
