Residents gather to pay respects in George's Square Continued from page 8 late Colonel Geoff Parker, 42, of Oakville, who was killed in Afghanistan on May 18, 2010 when a suicide car bomber blew himself up beside the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy Parker was travelling with. Overall, Friday morning's ceremony was viewed as a great success. Anne Hetherington, mother of Afghan Veteran and Oakville native Colonel Simon Hetherington, praised the ceremony for covering all angles. "It was well worth coming and seeing people's reaction and seeing young people come here, too, was really nice," she said. Colonel Hetherington said he and his mother have been attending the Cenotaph ceremony for many years, but said this year was special. "This year, I thought it would be nice to come down and spend Remembrance Day here and honour a friend who is up there today," he said. It was Hetherington who led a press conference in Afghanistan on May 18, 2010, which informed the public that Colonel Geoff Parker had been killed. Second World War veteran Jim Gibb, 91, also praised the ceremony. Gibb joined the army at age 18, serving as an artillery gunner. He participated in the invasions of Sicily and Italy and in the fighting that followed during Canada's Italian campaign. He also spent five months fighting in Holland. "Four of my friends didn't come home with me," said Gibb. "They are still there." A Valued Addition to Our Estate & Business Succession Services Group We are delighted to announce that Daniel C.
