"To help people out at Christmas is a nice thing. It's a nice season in which we're all thinking about taking care of one another ­ but (once) January, February and March roll along, we're looking at how much we spent and we stop thinking about others," said Di Sabatino. "We want people to give, we want people to support us to provide finances and resources for Kerr Street Ministries over the next little while." Last year, the program served 460 families, including 1,000 individuals, and it was changed to allow families and individuals to choose their own food and gifts. Approximately 14,000 people in Oakville live at or below the poverty line annually -- 25 per cent of them are children under age 14. "A municipality can't do everything, we would like to reach the vulnerable and help the needy in our community. We depend on organizations like Kerr Street Ministries to do it," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. The mayor said KSM is well aware of the need and is well-positioned to offer assistance. Burton acknowledged that in south-central Oakville the need for affordable housing is six times greater than elsewhere in town. It is in that area that many immigrant families have settled. The area is also home to three times as many families who are living at or below income cut-offs, two times as many loneparent families and three times as many people with less than high school education, said the mayor. "I hope everyone in Oakville sees and understands the need to put your shoulders to the wheel and help get this moving," said Burton.
