S Sports Three Oakville Hornets teams had a little bit extra to be thankful for last weekend. Local teams won three of eight division titles at the girls' hockey association's annual Harvest Classic tournament, which took place over the Thanksgiving weekend. The atom AA, bantam AA (Merrick) and midget A (Barkley) Hornets teams all claimed their respective division crowns. The peewee B Hornets fell just shy of earning Oakville's fourth gold of the tournament, settling for silver after dropping a 2-1 decision to Sudbury in the final. Midget A The midget A Hornets (Barkley) squad was one of two Oakville teams that competed in the midget A division. Coached by Bert Barkley, the Hornets rolled to a 5-0-1 record in the tournament, including a 1-0 win over the other Oakville entry (Casey) in round-robin play. The Barkley-coached Hornets finished off the competition with 1-0 wins in the semifinals and championship game. Annie Nasato scored the winner in the semifinal win over the Orangeville Tigers, while Emma Wingrave provided the decisive marker in the gold-medal contest against Belmont. Oakville netminders Hailey Saxton and Paige Saunders combined to limit opponents to just three goals in the Hornets' six tournament contests. The Barkley Hornets' showing at the Harvest Classic bolstered their tournament and exhibition record this year to 10-2-2. The team opens Lower Lakes Female Hockey League regular-season play this weekend. Bantam AA Oakville's bantam AA (Merrick) team clinched its second tournament title of the young season by blanking the Barrie Sharks 2-0 in last weekend's final. Claire Merrick and Jessica Desautels provided the offence in the gold-medal game as Oakville avenged a 3-2 loss to the Sharks during round-robin play. Sarah Hine, Mackenzie Stamper, Desautels and Merrick drew assists in the final. Hornets goaltenders Sarah McDonnell and Kaitlyn Simpson were rock solid throughout the tournament, combining for back-to-back shutouts in the semifinals and final.
