The film will be shown next fall through MADD's School Multi-Media Assembly Program. The film, shot this summer in north Halton-- in Georgetown, Milton and Huntsville-- follows a group of teens as they head to the cottage for the weekend. Inside the car is a teen driver, his older brother, a friend and the driver's girlfriend. Audiences will get to know the teens as they follow them en route to a cottage and as they indulge in risky behaviour. "We want the audiences to think of them as their friends, see themselves in that situation," said Wanda Kristensen, MADD's director of programs. The crash scene was filmed over two days in the area of No. 17 Sideroad and Nassagaweya and Esquesing townlines. It was meticulously rehearsed and filmed with the invaluable co-operation and assistance of Halton police, the Milton Fire Department and Halton EMS in Milton, a major reason this area was chosen a second time for filming, said Kristensen. "It's quite a dramatic scene when it's all edited together. We really pushed the envelope as far as injuries and carnage." The film opens with the crash scene. What unfolds is the teenage driver's memories of all the mistakes he has made leading up to the deaths and injuries. MADD chose a summer scenario for the storyline as it's a particularly risky time for teens. When the film is presented in the fall of 2012 -- free of charge to schools thanks to the LCBO sponsorship -- it will include footage of f three real life victim testimonials and where possible, appearances by actual victims. "Kids have said these are the hardest things to watch." MADD believes it's making a difference, said Kristensen, who lost her 16-year-old son David in 1996 when he was a passenger in a car driven by an impaired driver that crashed into a hydro pole. A recent MADD initiative surveyed students for their reactions and thoughts immediately after viewing the film, then three months later. Results revealed some had changed their habits. "There will always be some who are harder to reach but if we can save GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER ON THE SCENE: MADD Canada filming a movie as part of its MADD Canada School Assembly Program to be shown nationwide in the fall of 2012 to one million students from Grades 7-12. Here, director John Bradshaw, left, directs paramedics in the set-up of the rescue scene. one life in a school, it will have been well worth it for us," said Kristensen. A key message MADD is also trying to reinforce is not to get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. "Young women are less likely to drive impaired but more likely to get into a car with an impaired driver, she said. This decision, which could be a fatal one, is also addressed in the film, she added.
