The Christmas season has arrived at the local Christian organization and it hopes members of the community will embrace the spirit of giving by helping fill its stores with toys and food for those in need. Also, the organization needs monetary donations and a large number of volunteers to make Christmas possible for all in the community. "We wouldn't be able to do it without community support," said Major Dan Broome. "It takes a lot of people to raise this much money, to service the number of f families who will be receiving assistance from us this Christmas. We're a small church. We're a small army that grows this time of year." The organization does a number of f things each holiday season. Among the most evident is its Christmas Kettle campaign and its toy drive. Transit cash fares to rise as of Jan.1 By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville Transit's cash fare will jump from $3 to $3.25 effective Jan. 1, 2012. The majority of Town of Oakville council voted to pass a 2012 budget committee recommendation for the increase Monday night, despite some dissenting opinions. "I am most concerned about the lack of process around the transit fare increase," said Lisa Seiler in a delegation to council. "Transit fare increases have traditionally been discussed through the budget process, which typically spans about a month, from start to finish. This current proposal has been in front of the public for less than a week. I am concerned, Lisa Seiler among other things, about setting precedent here." Seiler said last year's council decision to eliminate the Transit Advisory Committee has meant members of the public have less opportunity to find out about changes, such as fare increases -- and to weigh in on them. Seiler called on council to defer its decision to the budget deliberation period of January/February to allow for more public consultation.
