www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, November 24, 2011 · 30 Health Police officers boost autism chapter with annual fundraiser Halton police officers have given a local autism chapter a financial boost. The Halton Regional Police Association (HRPA), in partnership with the service's Tactical Rescue Unit, raised $12,000 at a recent annual fundraiser to support the Autism OntarioHalton Chapter. The event held at Monaghan's Sports Pub and Grill in Oakville hosted more than 300 police officers, their friends, families and members of the community. The first such fundraiser was held in 1999 through an HRPA officer who had a son with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). And more assistance is on the way. Last year, the HRPA Tactical Rescue Unit hosted a Christmas party with more than 300 people, including children with ASD, their siblings and parents. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that emerges in infants and young children and continues through adulthood. ASD can result in a delay in or lack of language communication, impaired social skills and behavioural problems. It is found four times more often in boys than girls. More than 80,000 Ontarians struggle with ASD, with an estimated 5,000 living in Halton. This year's Children's Christmas Party hosted by the HRPA Tactical Rescue Unit, is open to all families with an ASD child. It will be held Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2-4:30 p.m., at the OE Banquet and Conference Centre, 2245 Speers Rd., Oakville. For more information about Autism OntarioHalton Chapter, the Christmas Party or to register your family, call 905-631-1233 or visit www. autismhalton.com. The influenza virus is a highly-contagious, seasonal illness that can lead to other serious health problems, including pneumonia and even death. Recent studies in Ontario have shown that the flu shot can prevent the number of cases by 70 to 90 per cent in healthy adults and children, eliminating the need for more than 200,000 doctor's visits and 30,000 emergency hospital visits each year. Here is a list of free flu shot clinics: · Shoppers Drug Mart, 905-4653000, 2501 Third Line, Building B, Nov. 26, noon-4 p.m. · Shoppers Drug Mart, 905-8271561, 2297 Lakeshore Rd. W., Nov. 29, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. · Shoppers Drug Mart, 905-2579737, 478 Dundas St. W., Dec. 9, 3-7 p.m. Vaccination works by strengthening your immune system against the flu virus by stimulating the immune system to build up antibodies against the virus, making it stronger so that it's ready to fight off the illness before infection even starts. Free flu shots are offered every year to Ontarians six months of age and older. Halton Region's Health Department is also hosting a series of free flu shot clinics at the Halton Regional Centre and a number of local schools located throughout the region.
