Salvation Army marches into its busiest season Continued from page 1 3 · Thursday, November 24, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com target of $130,000 for this year's Kettle Campaign, slightly higher than last year. The organization needs people to donate, but without volunteers to supervise the kettles nothing can be collected. "We have five staff that provide this Christmas outreach, but we need more than 230 volunteers to make it successful," said Aisha Chaney, community services co-ordinator at the Salvation Army. Salvation Army provides assistance to any person or family in Oakville who needs it, as long as they do not receive assistance from another organization. "Since January we've seen a dramatic increase in new cases of families walking through our doors and coming to family services for some kind of assistance," Chaney said. "I think with the way the economy has been going, you can never tell when you might need the help or you can't tell if the people who are in need could be your neighbour or they could be the person you sit beside in church or they a school friend of your children." The kettle campaign raises funds that assist the organization at Christmas, such as providing food vouchers to allow its clients to buy a meal for Christmas. Furthermore, this is also the Salvation Army's largest cash drive and helps pay for the organization's community programs beyond the holiday season. "Even if you don't have a lot yourself, there's always someone that's possibly worse off. Even if you could spare a dollar, it helps a lot," Chaney said. People can see the Salvation Army's campaign in the works. The Halton Regional Police Service's Toys for Tots campaign officially got underway on Thursday, Nov. 10. The Toy Mountain arrived at Oakville Place mall on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and the kettle campaign kicked off at the downtown Oakville tree-lighting ceremony last Friday. Following the kick off, kettles, and the volunteers supervising them, are now out in the community. Kettle volunteers work in threehour shifts. Kettles are in 10 locations in the community, Mondays to Saturdays. High school students can volunteer to collect community service hours. "I do kettles. I love it," Broome said. "It's a chance to get out into the community and meet people and share the message of the Salvation Army." There is another need for the organization. It needs a space, approximately 4,000-5,000 square-feet in size to house and distribute the toys that will be collected. The Salvation Army is appealing for someone in the community to donate such a space. A tax receipt will be "Since January, we've seen a dramatic increase in new cases of families walking through our doors and coming to family services for some kind of assistance." Aisha Chaney, co-ordinator community services, Salvation Army, Oakville feeds clients of the Salvation Army's shelter and food bank programs. People considering donating a new toy are also asked to consider the 12-to-17 age group, which is the hardest group to shop for. The reason behind the difficulty is the changing needs of those young people, Broome said. "I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with what that age group wants for Christmas. A lot of them are into electronics and a lot of electronics are very expensive," he said. Broome said the most requested items are the iPod, iPad and the iPhone, all made by Apple. "People can't afford that," he said. "If they're giving them, they're giving them to their own families. They don't "I do kettles. I love it. It's a chance to get out into the community and meet people and share the message of the Salvation Army." Major Dan Broome, pastor Salvation Army, Oakville issued for the full market value of the facility. It is preferred the Toy Depot be a store or a warehouse that is accessible by bus and easy to get to for the Salvation Army's clients. The space would be occupied Dec. 9 to 30. Distribution of toys and gifts will begin on Dec. 17. The last day of the toy distribution, and the last day of Toy Mountain at Oakville Place is Dec. 23. On Dec. 19, the Salvation Army will host its Annual Christmas Fellowship Dinner held at St. Paul's United Church, catered by Oakville's Adrian Vogt, his family and the team from Trident Catering. The dinner serves approximately 230 people and have the resources to give it to other people that may be in need. "We do struggle to come up with gifts." Chaney said some appropriate gifts are items such as gift cards, new clothing, cosmetic gift sets, small reasonably-priced electronics, sports equipment or similar items. The kettle campaign will end on Christmas Eve. At 4 p.m. the kettles will return to the Salvation Army and the campaign will close at the Fairway Hills community luminary event that evening, which is put on by the Fairway Hills Residents Association. Broome admits some people are able to give more than others, but he asks people to think of others. "Christmas is about giving. I think those who have should take the time to stop and look at those who don't," he said. "Every little bit helps. It's amazing how a coin just adds up. We have a very lofty goal but if everyone in Oakville just gave a dollar, we would have no trouble reaching our target."
