22 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville artist supports wetland conservation Artist Bruce K. Lawes of Oakville has joined some of Canada's foremost nature artists by donating his artwork to help Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) raise dollars for wetland conservation in 2007. This is the first time Lawes has been selected to join DUC's National Art Portfolio (NAP) program for two of his paintings, Drummer Boy and Red Heads, which was selected as this year's DUC Waterfowl Stamp and Print image. BEWARE OF IMITATORS WE RE TRULY UNIQUE!! Each year, hundreds of artists submit their artwork in hope of being chosen for the NAP. Those who are selected have their artwork made into high-quality prints that are auctioned at DUC fundraising events and Sealed Bid Auction sites across the country to raise money for wetland conservation work. "For over 20 years, artists have donated their artwork to help DUC conserve our precious but vanish- ing wetland habitats," said Travis Peckham, DUC chairman, Revenue and Membership. "Every year, these prints become increasingly important in our fundraising activities. Bruce K. Lawes' paintings, Drummer Boy and Red Heads are a great addition to our 2007 NAP, and I'm sure they will be very successful in helping us to raise the money we need to continue our wetland conservation work." Lawes is a world traveller, an internationally collected artist and a strong supportKITCHENS er of conservation. He is accomplished at BATHROOMS WALL UNITS painting any number of different subjects but wildlife themes are among his favourite. In Drummer Boy, Lawes captures in realistic detail an event that is often heard, but seldom seen a male grouse feverishly beating his chest to attract a mate. In addition to being a NAP artist, Lawes has been named DUC's 2007 Waterfowl Stamp and Print Artist for Red Heads. This piece brings out the warmth and radiance of the redhead duck, as a hen glides gracefully in the water, her drake companion standing watch nearby. Canada's wetlands are disappearing. Up to 70 per cent have already disappeared in settled areas of Canada. The money raised through the NAP supports DUC's on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and wetland education programs. For information on upcoming DUC events, visit www.ducks.ca. Since 1938, DUC has conserved, restored and managed wetlands and their associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people.
