www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 14, 2007 - 25 'Blazers score when it matters most in girls' hockey final By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It was all about timing for the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers: not how many goals they scored, but when. The Trailblazers bounced back from a 5-0 loss to the T.A. Blakelock Tigers moments earlier to win the Halton girls' tier II hockey championship in a sudden-death overtime period last week at Oakville Arena. "I can't even believe we won," said Chelsea Young, who scored 72 seconds into overtime. "We were really nervous (going into overtime) because things weren't working out too well." The odd situation was set up by the two-game format for the finals. Iroquois Ridge won the opener 1-0 behind a spectacular goaltending performance by Stef Wilson and another game-winner from Young. In the second game, the Tigers dominated -- much as they had in the first contest -- but this time were able to capitalize on their opportunities, building a 3-0 lead by the end of the first and adding two more in the second. While the 'Blazers were taking solace in a strong season that saw them go 7-1 and reach the final, they were pleasantly surprised during the third period to discover that a loss -- by any score -- would simply tie the series at a game apiece. Pleasant surprise for Iroquois Ridge "We were actually shocked that it was even going to overtime," said Ridge coach Dave Desrochers. "We had kind of thought it was total goals for the two games." Young added, "It was a relief because we knew we had a second chance." And the 'Blazers made the most of it. Just over a minute into the overtime, Young broke in on the right side and fired a shot as she cut through the slot. Blakelock's Sarah Arcaro, who had just shut out the 'Blazers in Game 2, got a piece of the shot but the puck fell to the ice and trickled into the back of the net. "We were really pumped for (overtime)," said the Tigers' Hillary Newman, who scored twice in the 5-0 victory. "Then there was such a big letdown after that goal because it was so unexpected, after such a big game, to just lose it so quickly." "That's the nature of sudden"I can't even death overtime. One shot wins it. believe we won. They got a shot, they won it. Simple as that," said Blakelock coach Ron We were really Larose. "Unfortunately, we were nervous (going put in a situation where losing the into overtime) first game 1-0 -- and we played just because things as well as (Game 2), we just couldweren't working n't score -- we had to win the game and the overtime and it was just a out too well." bit too much." Chelsea Young The finals were the first setback for a team that had just 10 skaters and played some of its games with as few as eight. Still, the Tigers managed to beat some tier I teams in tournament play and went 8-0, sealing their undefeated regular season with a 3-2 win over Iroquois Ridge in the final game of the regular season. The team has just one graduating player, Erika Coules, meaning they will have a strong core to build around, including Game 2 goal-scorers Alex Saunders, Melanie Johnson and Hillary Jutras. Iroquois Ridge was also working with a short bench. Injuries to Claire Rourke and Emma Revell left the Trailblazers with only 11 skaters. The 'Blazers had lost in overtime of last year's semifinals, before the league was divided into two tiers. However, they lost three key players to the Oakville Ice junior squad. They'll lose three more this season: Emily Stacey, Wilson and Kira Hanley, who set up the winning goal. Iroquois Ridge opened the season with seven straight wins before being edged by Blakelock in the regular season finalé. Although the Trailblazers had played tight games with the Tigers, Desrochers knew his players had their work cut out for them in the final. "As you saw, they're a very strong team. We figured we'd either steal it or, if we lost, it was a great season anyway."
