Fencers dominate local meet Several members of the Canadian Fencing Academy of Oakville have earned medals recently at various competitions around the province. In their most recent event, the local fencers hosted a modern pentathlon competition and dominated both the youth and senior divisions. Christie McLellan (gold), Calvin Buschlen (silver) and Roman Jakubowski (bronze) gave the Canadian Fencing Academy a podium sweep in the youth division, while five-year-old Burke Willson placed eighth. In senior action, Clare Illingworth was first, Stephen Willson placed third, Brittany Emery finished fourth and Carolyn Willson came fifth. Another local group headed to London for the open elite Hero's Tournament. Kirsten Ball earned her 10th medal of the season with a victory in women's epee, while Jacek Baldowski earned silver in men's epee. Other Oakville competitors were Leah Fidanza (fifth, women's foil), Janet Jackowski (seventh, women's epee), Mike Kreder (eighth, men's epee and men's foil), Bernadette Gomes (ninth, women's foil) and Sam Salerno (11th, men's foil). The previous week, seven Canadian Fencing Academy members competed in Newmarket. Fidanza claimed silver in women's foil, while Gomes was eighth, SPORTS BRIEFS Maddison Osborne was 23rd and Eryn Dickison was 27th. In men's foil, Salerno was 26th and John Chan was 51st. Stephen Willson placed 19th in men's epee. Competitive members will next head to Atlanta for the next stop of the North American Cup of fencing, and are also preparing for the upcoming provincials. The club anticipates a number of podium showings at the all-Ontario meet. Regional medals for Wolfpack The Oakville-based CheerForce Wolfpack recently participated in a pair of Ontario Cheerleading Federation competitions, earning medals at both. At the south regionals earlier this month, the Wolfpack won four gold, a silver and a bronze. CheerForce's junior Level 4, large senior co-ed Level 4, large senior co-ed Level 5 and open co-ed Level 6 squads all placed first, the large senior all-girl Level 3 team claimed second and the junior Level 3 team finished third. The club's youth Level 2 entry was sixth. The Wolfpack also attended a wildcard competition in Mississauga, open to clubs from any region in the province.
