4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com DAVID RITCHIE / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER RESCUED: Emergency workers gather around one of the passengers pulled from a car that crashed into a power pole on Upper Middle road on Friday night. Police received reports of explosion Continued from page 1 The True Europe Experts 400 per couple $ at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, say police. The Regional Traffic Bureau suspects speed was a "significant factor" in the accident. With the weight of the pole, the danger of it falling further onto the car and the shape the vehicle was in after the accident, rescuing the injured passenger was "very difficult," said Oakville Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Bob Sumak. Oakville EMS, police and fire used the Jaws of Life and cutters in the rescue. "It was a lot of strategy to remove him without further injuring him," said Sumak. "Because of the severity of the accident, the victim was in there pretty tight. The car was definitely wrapped around the pole and hit it at a great impact." Such an impact that police responded to "an overwhelming volume" of 911 calls from residents who heard a loud explosion and then expe- rienced power outages. The utility pole was a high-capacity line that supported a main hydro line running through the region. It also supported a fibre-optic cable carrying telecommunications lines to Oakville, Burlington and surrounding communities. Sumak says EMS, police and the fire department ensured all power was shut down before beginning their rescue just after 9:20 p.m. on Friday. After two hours and 15 minutes, Sumak says, the injured man was taken by air ambulance to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto where he was in surgery until Saturday afternoon. The Regional Traffic Bureau Collision Reconstructionists continue to investigate the accident, Payne says. No charges have been laid yet and alcohol isn't suspected as a factor. Any witnesses should contact Det. Cst. Paul Davies of the Regional Traffic Bureau's Investigative Section at 905-825-4747 ext 2381. Save UP TO Early booking savings on all Europe packages.
