New charges in shooting A 25-year-old Ohsweken man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in connection with the Oct. 22 shooting in Oakville. The police pursuit and shooting resulted in a 27-year-old woman receiving a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Halton police announced Thursday, they were filing additional charges against two of the men arrested in the incident as the result of an ongoing investigation. Police said the drama began at approximately 9 p.m. when officers were called to the Oakville Entertainment Centrum at 2081 Winston Park Dr., in response to a vehicle theft. In their statement to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), police said the vehicle was later located on a laneway on North Service Road, near the Oakville Water Treatment Plant. The black SUV was accompanied by another vehicle, which had been reported stolen earlier from Burlington. Police said as the drivers of both vehicles attempted to flee, officers opened fire. One driver fled eastbound along North Service Road where the SUV collided with a police cruiser near Third Line. Police again fired shots. The female passenger in the SUV V received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder. She was arrested and taken to Hamilton General Hospital. The male driver fled the scene, but was caught a short time later. One police officer injured his hand in the incident. An arrest was also made in connection with the theft of the second vehicle. At that time Jacqueline Capton, 27, was charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Charles Laforme, 25, was charged with obstructing a police officer, flight from a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Jeffry Martin, 31, was charged with possession of burglary tools, operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Laforme is now facing the additional charges of attempted murder, three counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, three counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Martin has also been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and aggravated assault of a peace officer. The SIU is investigating this incident. 7 · Friday, November 25, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Our new stores.
