Webb bb landed l d d on France's ' Juno Beach h in the h first f wave Continued from page 1 19 · Friday, November 18, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Canada and many others, as well as personal donations. The centre, a museum that pays homage to Canadian soldiers in the war, opened on June 6, 2003. Trustees heard from delegates, including three individuals supporting the name of Garth Webb, during the meeting. Peter Moffatt said he became friends with Webb after he began volunteering for the Juno Beach Association. He even travelled to Juno Beach with Webb. "I stood beside a D-Day veteran on Juno Beach and had him point to the exact spot where he came ashore more than 65 years ago," he said. "Our children will not have this opportunity. Our World War II veterans will not be with us that much longer and we need to keep their memory alive." Captain Shawn Stuart of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008, also spoke to trustees. He said his job was to prevent armed conflict by influencing local populations to not support the insurgents and instead to support the Allies. Webb was an artillery officer in the same regiment that Stuart's grandfather served in during the Second World War. "Garth landed on Juno Beach in the first wave," he said. "Within a year, the Allies had brought an end to the six-year war and peace to the world but not without its sacrifices." He said Webb and his comrades embarked on an ambitious task to honour Canada's fallen sol- diers and spent years raising money to do so. The centre, named for the Juno Beach landing site, has been listed as a location of national, historic significance; Webb was honoured with a Meritorious Service Cross and recently was nominated for appointment to the Order of Canada. "Garth has committed himself to educating the Canadian people on the history of World War II in the hope it will never happen again," Stuart said. "To name a school after Mr. Webb will not be a glorification of war; however, it will be an act of remembrance." Another delegate, Pam Calvert, encouraged trustees to name the school after Webb. "Students who enter Garth Webb High School will know their school is named after a Halton man who is a proud Canadian, who served his country, a visionary, who persevered through adversity, never gave up on his dream, a man who looked to the future and left a legacy of promoting peace," she said. "He made a contribution to the education of Canadian students, not because it was his job, but because he believed in the education of young people." Trustees voted on the school name by secret ballot. Other names that were up for consideration included Joyce Burnell, Oak Trails, Oakville Concordia and Oak Trails Concordia, all ending with Secondary School.
